The Greatest Benefits of a College Degree by Emily - October 2024 Scholarship Essay

In this day and age college is not only something that is highly impressed upon high school students, but also upon adults who are ready to start their dream career. More often than not you are told college is an opportunity to show others around you the great things you are capable of while swinging doors open for a better future through a learning and growing environment. While I acknowledge that college is not the only option that paves the way for a steady job, it is one that allows for greater opportunities, that a regular high school diploma cannot provide you with. Depending on the educational path you choose to walk, college degrees can provide you with benefits through careers ranging from being an educator to being a lawyer at the highest law firm.
A steady income is one of the highest concerns in today's world. As inflation rises, a common question that many people find themselves asking is, “Do I have enough money to support myself and my family?” This has been a question I have found myself pondering. As I think of this I find myself realizing one of the greatest benefits of a college degree is a more promising future and a feeling of financial certainty. With a college degree, one can meet the qualifications that many well-paying professions require. This is a great benefit and motivation for graduating at the collegiate level.
Furthermore, it is well known that many employers first look to see if applicants have a college degree whether it is or is not a requirement for the job. When you succeed in receiving higher education, employers see it as a testament to your character, work ethic, and advanced capabilities. Your college degree shows drive to not only want to learn and excel in a task but also that you have been faced with many challenges and overcome them. This makes one set apart and more desirable in the workforce. Therefore, a great benefit is that one is more likely to be selected from the pool of applicants.
Moving forward, college degrees can open doors for you to be able to not only choose the profession you want to excel in but also give you more freedom to choose who you desire to work with or for. When applying for such desired jobs, an individual with higher education in a specific job field, compared to another individual with no education and little to no knowledge of the profession, is more likely to be considered and hired. Had you not seated yourself in a classroom for hours upon hours, you may not have been presented with the ability to be hired in the first place.
With that being said, not only do you glean the benefit of higher seating in the job market but also a higher pay grade and possible incentives that come along with it. Will there be situations where you may be worried about how you are going to provide? Yes, this is the price life comes with. But will there also be times you are so grateful for the amount of hard work and effort you poured into receiving a college degree? Yes, this sets you up for greater success. At the end of the day, the greatest benefit of a college degree is the amount of opportunities opened up to you all the while having the freedom to decide what you want. A college degree can be a simple line on your resume, but the volume it speaks to your hard work and dedication is something that you cannot replicate. When working for a college degree, a positive consequence is rewarded. This positive consequence can look like anything, from earning the job title of your dreams to finally being hired at your Local Hospital to becoming the RN you have always looked up to. With a college degree, opportunity will always be within the reach of your fingers. It is your choice whether you will reach for those opportunities or not. A college degree is just one of the many ways you can not only educate yourself but support yourself and others around you in furthering their education because of the possibilities you can model for them without even realizing it. It only takes motivation for success and the mindset of achieving what seems impossible and turning it into a reality. Doors don’t open by themselves if you’ve ever noticed, it takes twisting the handle and pushing on the wood frame to open the door. In the same way, a college degree opens the doors from the moment you apply for colleges, to sitting in those classes, paying attention, and getting to work. At the end of the journey, the door of financial freedom, character development and opportunity will open as you get one step forward to the life you have always aspired to have.
