More Than A Degree by Emily - October 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a high school senior from a small, rural community, I believe that a college degree offers immeasurable benefits, extending far beyond a diploma. For me, college represents an opportunity to leave my familiar surroundings and immerse myself in a larger, more diverse learning environment. By exposing myself to different perspectives and engaging with a broader community of learners, I can broaden my own lens and challenge any preconceptions. While daunting, my hope is that a college experience will help me to grow, push me to do things I could not do in the comfort of my own community and support me in being the best version of myself.
This past year I began working at a non-profit law firm. While my initial intention was solely focused on earning money to save for college, the experience has changed me forever. My role is to create social media content in both English and Spanish, translate legal documents from English to Spanish as well as support our local migrant families with legal documentation at our Farmworkers Center. This experience has reinforced the indispensable role of a college education in my professional aspirations. The complex legal issues and systemic challenges faced by these communities require a deep understanding of relevant laws, policies, and advocacy strategies. A college degree will equip me with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide effective support and representation to these vulnerable populations.
In conclusion, a college degree is not merely a stepping stone to a career; it is a transformative experience that fosters personal growth, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to making a positive impact on society. By pursuing higher education, I hope to gain the tools and knowledge necessary to contribute meaningfully to my community, advocate for marginalized groups, and create a more equitable and just world.
