My Educational Goal by Emily - August 2024 Scholarship Essay
I want to further my education in order to have a lifelong job that is fulfilling, enjoyable, and expanding. The most common questions I have been asked recently include, “What are you studying in college?” and “What do you want to do?” The advice that follows those questions surrounds the idea of finding something you love and making a career out of it. I believe forensic investigation is the job for me.
Growing up, I loved solving puzzles. I was constantly playing board games, card games, or anything that involved using my mind in a fun and challenging way. As I got older, I found television shows and movies that involved mysteries and crimes to be the most fascinating. Soon, the obvious career choice for me became being a detective. However, I’ve also always excelled and enjoyed the subjects of math and science in school the most. After researching how I am able to get all of these concepts in one job, I found forensic investigation. These people not only get to do the science portion of collecting the data and samples, but they also get to help solve the puzzle as a whole.
Not only do I like the work done by a forensic investigator, but also the involvement in the community. As a child, I always looked up to my father and other firefighters for their dedication and commitment to helping and protecting their neighborhood. The departments and stations work closely together and have tight bonds that extend even after the firefighter has retired. Because I was raised in a household with a first responder and experienced this feeling of family; I have also dreamed of having a job that helps people in some way. Even though crime scene investigators and lab technicians are not the first people thought of as community service personnel, they are still necessary for crimes and accidents to be solved properly and effectively. Without the photos taken and the data collected by the crime scene investigators, evidence would not be available to connect suspects and victims. Without lab technicians, the evidence collected could not be analyzed for matches or discrepancies used to solve a case.
In order to have a life of excitement, fulfillment, and change, I need to further my education past a high school diploma. I want to live a life that is different, everchanging, and impactful. I want a job that is mobile, challenging, and stimulating. Forensic investigation is a career that includes all of these concepts and ideas in one full-time job.
