Laziness by Emily - August 2013 Scholarship Essay

The most intersting lesson I have ever learned in a class was that everyone is lazy. I was in eighth grade sitting in my math class and my teacher always said how lazy we were. Finally one of the students asked, "How exactly are we all lazy if we do the work?". His answer was, "To be honest, you may do the work, but does it mean anything to you?". He went on saying stuff about how we come to class everyday with most or all the materials, sit down in our desks and talk to our friends until class starts. We all agreed to what he was saying then he went on saying on how we do our work and hand it in, but we never really pay attention to what we are learning or how we can apply it to our lives. We asked how that really makes us the definition of lazy and he continued on saying how laziness defines ourselves. We kept contemplating on what he was saying and he continued on about how when we do the work some of us don't turn it in on time, or we don't finish because we talk to others around us or we just don't want to do it. Doing all that makes us lazy. He pulled out all of our work and tests and showed it to us. He went on saying how if we pay attention and do what is asked of us all of our work could be better to where we get better grades and test scores. We all took it to heart and throughout the rest of the year it really stuck with us. We ended up all getting high A's in that class and all got advanced on our ISAT scores in that class. To this day it still stuck with me and I still hold it to heart.
