Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover by Emily - June 2022 Scholarship Essay

Beauty is only skin deep. Beauty and the Beast, a book and a movie, teaches young readers to not judge someone by what you see at first. When you judge someone or something by only what is on the outside, you are missing the value and worth of their personality and character.

The main character Belle meets a beast and is at first frightened, but then he reveals his true self. Over time she continues to get to know the beast and falls for him. If she would have only judged him by what he looked like on the outside, she would have never connected with him on their many similarities such as reading. She continued to be kind to him and talk to him daily, and eventually she helped him reach his true form of king. Belle is able to look past the nasty fur and razor-sharp teeth. She is able to see his heart of gold and compassionate side.
Sometimes it takes time to reveal someone’s true self, but it is much more valuable knowing how they act as a person than knowing what they look like.

In the past, I have let someone’s outer appearance keep me from getting to know them and I was disappointed that I missed out on a true friendship. George Eliot’s famous saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” is valuable life lesson that everyone should know.
