Celebrating Uniqueness by Emily - April 2022 Scholarship Essay
My first day in the first grade classroom was a bit chaotic - one student had a sore tooth, students’ headphones weren't functioning properly, English words were thrown around in the Spanish classroom, and this new lady, me, was there to help. Unlike most, this elementary school is bilingual. I attended it myself and understand the privilege it is to be bilingual, so I am extremely fortunate to pass my learning along to the next generation.
Currently I love the challenge of identifying and adapting to each child’s method of learning. For Brexten, it took me a while to figure out how to help him concentrate. One day when the teacher was giving instructions, sitting still was the least of his priorities. In frustration, the teacher told him to come sit next to me. While I could have required him to stay quiet beside me, that is not what Brexten needed. Instead, I looked him in the eyes and said softly, “tell me about your Lego League club.” His whole demeanor calmed as he explained his most recent robot. I discovered that individual attention was what he lacked. When the teacher handed him his papers, he was ready to work.
Through my experience, I've learned that each student responds to different actions. Julieta needs soft instruction. Clyde likes to be asked about Minecraft. Ashley benefits from receiving praise. Ian needs someone to listen fully. These kids are growing into themselves and I am honored to be a small influence on their unique journeys. It’s amazing how each student has a different personality and learning style that I am still only beginning to understand. I look forward to the rest of this year to continue guiding the first graders’ learning of Spanish, opening their eyes to the world around them, and watching them grow into awesome human beings.
