Multimedia Clubs will introduce young students to a great career. by Emily - September 2019 Scholarship Essay

As a young filmmaker/photographer, I struggled to find clubs or organizations that fully represented my passion. I took every opportunity that allowed me to exercise my filmmaking abilities, but there was no club focused solely on multimedia. I believe it would be a great opportunity for young filmmakers to experience multimedia in the real world by having a club that provides media advertisements to other clubs on campus. This way, there will be projects that motivate students to create quality content for other clubs.
The reason why photography and filmmaking clubs are unpopular or fail (judging by the photography club on my campus) is that the clubs are centered on discussion of photos and videos taken outside of the club. There is no real stimulation of the creation of content, and therefore most clubs of this nature fail.
With a multimedia club, the demand of projects from other clubs will help stimulate creativity among the students. Having a pressed deadline for material puts pressure on the students and keeps them motivated to keep up with the demand. The media students will produce content such as promotional videos, photo coverage, and graphic designs for shirts and other promotional material for other clubs. For example, the basketball team wants a video to display at their end of the year banquet. They will contact the multimedia club and commission them to produce a video.
Since the clubs and sports teams fundraise their own money, they can make a budget for their marketing materials, and cover the cost of production that it takes for the multimedia team to produce it.
I believe having an opportunity like this will not only help improve students' filmmaking, photography and graphic design skills, but will introduce them to a career that is seeing an increase in demand. The simulation of media business in the real world will help with marketing skills and will give the students an idea of what they will be doing if they pursued this career.
This idea is based off of my current job. My department is commissioned to make videos and photos for other departments and programs. I was introduced to filmmaking at an early age, and I filmed sports games for pep rallies and made videos for other school events. I practiced my photo skills by shooting photos of events for the school newspaper. But there was never a club that encouraged students to make videos and photos, I shot videos on my own. If I had a club like this in high school, I believe it would be a great opportunity to collaborate with a team of filmmakers and share ideas to create even better videos.
Multimedia marketing and advertising are important skills and can lead to a career if introduced at the high school level.
