Following My Attainable Dream by Emily - February 2019 Scholarship Essay
Although teaching is not the most luxurious job, from a young age teaching has always been my dream. Unlike most of my classmates, I have continued through high school extremely certain that teaching is the job that I want to pursue. Specifically, I want to major in Elementary Education since the curriculum and that age group is more appealing. Decorating a classroom of my own, making lesson plans, and being able to work with other teachers are just some of the benefits of becoming a teacher that I am excited to experience. However, inspiring each class that I will have the opportunity to teach will be the most rewarding quality of my career. Ultimately teaching is the foundation for all of the careers in the world, and I am honored to be able to influence future generations.
Choosing a school that best represents and encourages my major will be a crucial requirement for the success of my dream job. The University of South Carolina and the College of Charleston are both highly respected schools that include a diverse amount of education majors to choose from. I also plan on being an active participant in local classrooms by observing and assisting teachers in local schools around my college. Observation hours are important for being a cultivated teacher and for getting advice on different teaching styles and other educational information. Joining clubs will allow me to also meet people in college that will give me experience with working with people my age or older, like the students’ parents.
Not only will college prepare me for my teaching career, but high school is also encouraging me to start taking classes that will guide me in the right direction. As of my junior year, I have nine college hours, six in English 101/102 and three in Teacher Cadet. Teacher Cadet is the best experience of my high school career because it still encourages me to want to work in the fifth grade. I learned so much from my Teacher Cadet teacher and my cooperating teacher that I spent three weeks with during my class. That field experience has reassured me of wanting to become a teacher no matter the hardships that follow.
A dream job doesn’t have to be a career that makes a lot of money or one that everyone inspires to be. A dream job is something that you have to be committed to putting effort and love into. Although teaching is a tiresome job, I could not imagine doing anything else. After I complete my bachelor’s degree for Elementary Education, I will start on my Master’s degree in Special Education so then I will really be able to understand the variety of students that will be around a school environment. I feel as if my college plan will allow me to be the most successful in my career as an Elementary teacher.
