The Creative Flow of a Night Owl by Emily - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

Ever since I grew to the age when my parents no longer enforced strict bedtimes, I have been a night owl. Most of my best ideas and work have occurred late at night. Something about the night sky and the stillness of activity breeds motivation and excitement for me. I believe that I am one of the few in the world who have a genetic disposition for the night and the productivity it encourages in me. I can practically feel my brain and senses awaken between the hours of 10 pm and 2 am. During the late hours of the night, everything that swirls around in my brain all day long seems to become clear.
I feel that nighttime has less distractions overall than the morning. Usually, the morning is a hectic time when I am on a mission to do whatever I need to. At night, the day is finished and there are less distractions. I have the ability to decompress after the busy day and begin to focus on the things that I did not accomplish, or the things that I can do as a part of my own free time.
My favorite reason for being a night owl is that it is the opportune time to let my creativity flow as much as it wants. During the daytime, there are many responsibilities that must be taken care of. School is in session, work is calling, and the people around you seem to be staring you down, waiting for you to accomplish all that they want you to. When night falls, everything is calmer. School and work are closed, and the people who once pressured you to be the best in their eyes are asleep. During these serene hours of the night, I let my creativity flow freely. I no longer need to concern myself with the judgments or peering eyes of others. I am only concerned with what I want to do and how I can be most productive.
Many seem to think that staying up late pursuing creative passions is an immature and foolish thing to do, but I disagree. In my opinion, understanding night owls and why they like the night will help us understand that night owls are not lazy. I would never trade the pressure-free clearness of night for the muddiness of morning.
