Success' Timing by Emily - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

Everybody runs on their own clock whether they tick a little better in the morning or at night depends on the person. Some believe that it is established when you are born, that’s what my mom always said. Some people believe that the instinct changes as we age or that we can change it if we want to develop a different schedule. However, I believe that it is more of an instinct and can be altered if you so choose but your body naturally functions better at a certain time of the day.

“The early bird gets the worm.” That’s what everybody says at least, those who are most successful also advise others to start their days off early. I have always been a morning person myself; when I was a baby my mom would say that I would go to bed at 6:00 pm and wake up at 6:00 am everyday. I was always one for adventure and felt that getting up early and being well rested would help me in my endeavors. This has held true for me for nearly 19 years. Enough sleep and getting up early has gotten me this far and I imagine that these practices will carry me through to the end.

High school is when I really started to notice that early in the morning is when I did my best school work. Granted, it was always the homework that was due that day so my procrastination took me to the last moment that I could finish it but I was clear minded and able to grasp the material so much better. Once I caught onto the fact that my brain seemed to function better early in the morning I started using that to my advantage. As a first year college student I do a lot of my homework and studying in the mornings however, now it is not typically the morning that things are due. It is important to note that I am not a complete recovered procrastinator and still relapse frequently unfortunately, early mornings have not yet cured me of this.

Overall everybody has their own time of day or night that they find their most productive period for some it is easy to realize this time but for others it may take a little trial and error to understand their body and mentality. I think the successful people that say getting up early is the key to success have it right in a sense at least. Those people found and understand their most productive time and I think that that is the key to success not necessarily waking up early but knowing who you are delivers you to success’ door.
