Love Is The Light by Emily - November 2018 Scholarship Essay
If I could choose a yearbook quote to summarize my personal philosophy, I would choose to quote Martin Luther King Jr. when he said, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
As a pre-law student studying in a politically polarized culture, it's far too easy to get caught up in party affiliations, unimportant opinions, and petty arguments. Verbally abusive Facebook comments flood my phone screen. Family dinners are full of political tension, and my friends can't seem to agree on the definition of right and wrong. Hate fills my environment like a toxic vapor in the air. Each day I read the news and am shocked at the horrific crimes people commit against one another.
Hate crimes like the recent shooting at River of Life Synagogue are poignant reminders of the intense hate that still exists in 2018. Shootings, murders, assaults, attacks, fights, scandals, and abuses are abundant across the nation. In a time like this, where can we turn for hope?
Martin Luther King Jr. offered timeless advice on the matter. He states that evil action cannot be righted with additional wrong. The only weapon we have against cruelty is love. Love is a force that is sharper than any sword, stronger than any steel, and and more powerful than any explosive. Showing kindness to others and selflessly serving our community can help to crush the darkness that seems to invade our daily lives.
As I study and prepare for a career in law, I hope to one day attack the evil and crime that has infiltrated our society. I would do well to remember what Reverend King said - that the light of love is the only force capable of diffusing darkness.
