Scaredy Class by Emily - June 2018 Scholarship Essay
Oof! Splat! These were the sounds of my ego bruising. It was 1:15pm during my junior year of High School, so I was in my one elective course, Dance I: Fundamentals. Not for the first time, I had tripped over my own feet, twisted my ankle and landed on my face. To say that I am not a very good dancer is like saying that the Alps are lovely little hills or that breaking an arm can sometimes be unpleasant.
Let’s just say that my talents lie elsewhere. But that is the point.
The elective that should be a required class is any class that pushes you out of your comfort zone and into confusion and chaos. The one that makes you so scared that you reach for your teddy and lie down for a nap. The one that teaches you to laugh at yourself, commiserate with others and gives you that humility that only comes from failing big, Big, BIG in front of everyone.
Do your drawings of stick figures make a kindergartener look at you with pity in their young eyes? Take a sketching and drawing class! Does the kiln giggle quietly as you approach to break yet another vase? Take a ceramics course! You get the gist; face your fears head on, drag them out into the light, and watch them disappear.
Growing and learning are painful, but you might as well have a little fun doing it. My ankle has healed and I have moved on. I know that I will never dance professionally (hey, I heard that sigh of relief!), but I learned more about myself and others from my Dance I: Fundamentals class than from any class before or since.
Get out there! Take courses that shake you to your core; learn, laugh, live!
