Living By The Book by Emily - May 2017 Scholarship Essay
When asked what book has influenced my life best, my mind immediately jumps to fiction novels. I've been a big reader ever since I was a little kid reading Magic Treehouse books for my reading log. But when I think about each book I've read, none have really influenced me as much as one of the few nonfiction books I've read. The book that has impacted my life the most is the Bible. The Bible has given my life direction, truth, and hope.
Just like I read the Magic Treehouse books when I was younger, I also have read the Bible from a young age. It's truths have directed my steps in life. Whenever I have a question as to whether I should apply to this or pursue that I turn to the Bible.
The Bible has shaped who I am today. It has provided me with truths and instructions on how I should live. I have learned to be loving, tenderhearted, kind, forgiving, brave, steadfast... and the list goes on. If I had not discovered the truths of God's word, I would definitely not be where I am today. I wouldn't have the friends that I have or the ambitions that I am now pursuing. One of my favorite verses, Philippians 4:8 says, "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." This verse shapes my attitude and my outlook on life. If I am constantly dwelling on good things instead of bad things, I will have a better attitude.
I have also been given hope through the scriptures. God promises to provide for us and to sustain us even when the path seems dark or dangerous. With this hope, I don't have to fear what stepping out of my comfort zone could bring. As long as I trust God, he will uphold me. Philippians 4:13 says "I can do anything through Christ who gives me strength." I wear this promise around my wrist on a bracelet and I am constantly reminded of the strength and hope that God has given to me and told me about through His word. Another passage from the Bible that has impacted me is Psalms 42-43. In this passage, King David is going through a low spot in his life but throughout it all he reminds himself that God is his savior and he praises Him. I constantly praise God for the blessings he has given to me in my family, talents, and knowledge.
Without the Bible, I would not know God. The Bible has become such an important factor in my life and has influenced me to be who I am today. The Bible is basically a handbook for my life and I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm proud to say I'm living by The Book.
