Balancing Activities and Academics by Emily - December 2016 Scholarship Essay
My name is Emily Zimmer and I am applying for the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship. I originate from a small farm located outside of Pleasanton, NE and I was raised in a family of four. As a current sophomore in high school, I am looking to attend the University of Nebraska Lincoln to major in Nutrition, Exercise, and Health Science. After I graduate with a bachelor’s degree from UNL, I am seeking to attend the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha and graduate with a doctorate degree in Physical Therapy.
One accomplishment I am proud of is continually being on the distinguished honor roll throughout my high school career. Pleasanton Public School is a small rural school with an enrollment of about two hundred students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. By attending a small school, it is very convenient to be involved in a lot of extra-curricular activities. As a freshman in high school, I was involved in volleyball, basketball, track, cheer, dance, student council, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), one-act, band, choir, and yearbook. After attending classes all day, then participating in extra curricular activities, I had a small struggle trying to find the time to do my homework. However, even though I was always busy, I was able to take the time at home to study and complete my homework in order keep my grades high.
I am proud of myself for the ability to balance my time while being deeply involved in school activities, as well as being competitive in the classroom by maintaining a 4.0 GPA. This is important to me because I have learned many leadership, communication, and motor skills through my involvement that I will be able to maintain while obtaining my future career.
