The Most Important Thing I Learned by Emily - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
Throughout all of my high school career the most important lesson I learned from my teachers would not be how to solve for X or how to properly write and construct a research paper. Yes, I know those things will be important and helpful in my college career and later on in life but I would have to say it was not the most important thing my teachers taught me.
Many of my teachers have taught me many different things but the one teacher who always stands out to me is my chemistry teacher from senior year and out of all the things she has taught me, she may not even know she has taught me this. She has shown me that with whatever I decide to do with my life; whatever I decide to major in, I should truly enjoy and really have a passion for. I would always look forward to going to her class every day because she was such a great teacher. You could tell she was truly passionate and cared about her job and through her she has shown me that I want that in a job as well. She has taught me that ten years from now I should see myself being very happy where I’m at and loving what I’m doing, like she is in her job right now. And yes, other teachers did show me this same thing but she was the one teacher I had throughout all of high school that seemed to stick out, she seemed to go the extra mile because that’s how much she loved her job and that is what I want.
I used to wonder why high school science teachers decided that they wanted to be teachers and especially at a high school. I would wonder why they didn’t decide to just be a scientist and work in a lab, it always confused me when I was younger. I now know that certain people have to have the calling to be a teacher and they should be very passionate about what they are doing and I think this works with any career choice. My teacher has taught me that I should not just choose a major based off of a dare or a coin toss but it is something that I should really think about and I should truly care about.
This really means a lot to me because my future is something that I am constantly thinking about and I care about a lot. Sometimes I worry that I will run out of time and will have to choose a major based off of a coin toss but looking back and reflecting on her I know that if I did that it could make me very unhappy and I shouldn’t choose a major if I am unhappy.
