Be Happy with Yourself by Emily - April 2016 Scholarship Essay

High school can be one of the hardest transitions for an incoming student and it is a huge step forward for the person he will become in the future. What would I tell that scared freshman? Above all else, be happy with yourself. Value who you are and treat yourself with respect and kindness. When you make a mistake or have a setback, learn from it and move on. You would never put your friend down when he needs you the most. You would focus on the good. Do the same for yourself and be your best friend.

Being content with yourself will also exude a certain confidence that you may not even know you have. This will shine through in your actions and will follow you throughout life. Although this doesn't mean that your challenges will be easier, it does mean that you will be more accepting of the outcome. Goals you attain will be that much more rewarding.

Social life is also a big part of high school. Whether it be during school or after the final bell rings, you will be interacting with many new people. Some may become your friends; others, however, may not like you. If you are comfortable in your own skin, you will not feel the need to get everybody’s approval. This is a big step to accepting who you are.

Remember, you are a unique and special person. You have hidden talents awaiting to be discovered. You have a personality that is all your own. There will be many important people in your life but no one will be as important as you are. Be happy with yourself and everything else will fall into place. Dalai Lama’s insightful words say it the best, “We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.”
