The Business of Engineering by Emidio - December 2023 Scholarship Essay

Helping raise the quality of life of others is what drives me. When I picked to major in engineering for my undergraduate degree, and then chose to pursue a business degree for graduate school, I knew it would give me the tools I needed to satisfy my drive to help others. I first chose engineering to learn how to harness my creativity, and then chose business to learn how to distribute good products and ideas to others.

The engineering degree was an easy first step in the journey towards helping raise the quality of life of others. Engineers are the minds behind all the great conveniences of life. Engineers designed and manufactured smartphones. Engineers designed and produced every great bridge or highway for everyone to use. Engineers are the ones that will figure out how to make electric cars to save on carbon emissions. The creativity and drive to engineer differences attracted me to studying engineering in undergraduate school.

It was during my last year of undergraduate studies that I realized that making cool devices to solve problems like short phone battery life or engine inefficiency was only one part in my journey to help others improve their quality of life. There was the second step of funding, distribution, and personnel management in which I needed more information to accomplish my goals. During my first semester I learned that business is all about treating others well to allow people to trust that what I am selling is of value to them. These soft skills will help distribute high value products that will help people live healthy and fulfilled lives.

Engineering and business are not a normal scholarly combination, but a necessary one in accomplishing my goals. Studying engineering gave me insight on how to mold materials into a useful and valued product that will assist people living their lives. Studying business gives me the skills to distribute the product to those it would help most. My majors of engineering and business together will allow me to pursue my goal of producing and distributing products that help others live their lives easily and fully.
