Captain Joseph House Experience by Emi - April 2022 Scholarship Essay
The most significant impact that I have had on a community is singing the national anthem for my local Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts which was sponsored by the local Captain Joseph House Foundation and performing for their Open House while representing the entire high school choir. The organization was founded to provide a supportive living space for Gold Star Families while mourning the loss of a relative as a result of the devastation of war. I was motivated to serve them because of my love for music and my passion for supporting others. I don’t know what it is like to lose a loved one in the war, and I can only begin to imagine the devastation and sadness that Gold Star families endure. So, when I was asked to perform the national anthem with my two younger sisters, I was enthusiastic to join the Captain Joseph House Foundation in their efforts to heal the wounded hearts of Gold Star generations.
After this experience, I was inspired to view the world in the eyes of someone who is suffering. When I began to become aware of and accept my own suffering for what it is, I realized that all of us suffer in one way or another. By being aware of my own suffering, I was able to open my heart to all in the world no matter their background or circumstance. I developed a passion for providing for others while being grateful for everything that I have in my life.
