Study groups by Elliot - January 2014 Scholarship Essay
The most effective study method that I use is utilizing study groups. In study groups questions are looked up as a group. Sometimes another student can already answer the questions you may have. They also provide a motivation or drive to study harder.
I am the one who sets up the first study groups in the classes that I have taken so far. I am the one who leads the study groups often being the one others look to for the answers. I enjoy being the leader of these study groups.
In Math classes I end up being a tutor for those students that are struggling. This helps me retain the information. I believe that if you learn a subject well enough to teach someone else the information that you have learned will stay with you longer. I have proven this by getting A's and B's in all my classes over the past two years.
I will continue using study groups as long as I can find willing participants. It is sometime difficult to find interested parties due to most people have lives outside of school. I have dedicated myself to my studies. I study for a least 4 hours everyday, even if I have no assigned course work. I sometimes just review the material covered in lectures and sometimes it is a matter of learning new material not yet lectured on. I stay ahead as much as possible.
In addition to study groups I also like to use the Cornell note taking system. This allows me to identify questions that I have to bring to discussion groups. I identify were my weakness is and learn ways to comprehend the material. I sometimes go over the chapters in the textbooks several times making notes each time. This allows me to learn more information and retain this information.
