Heroes by Ella - December 2023 Scholarship Essay

In the fall, I plan to pursue a degree in medical studies to continue my education. With this degree, I plan to become a physician assistant. My chosen major benefits society in many ways. I have extreme respect for all medical professionals, and I hope to continue in their footsteps.
When thinking of the medical field, one normally thinks about helping others through sickness and making them feel better physically. However, there is so much more to medicine than just that. Yes, medical professionals are extremely important in that they can bring people physical relief and save them from illness, but that is not the only reason that the medical field is crucial to society.
Medical professionals help people through the scariest and most vulnerable points of their life. They have to be emotionally strong to support people. When delivering horrible news, they have to be compassionate and comforting. Then, they have to go to the next room and deliver exciting, hopeful news with a smile on their face. They have to comfort families. They have to help others in their time of need while also balancing their own emotions and dealing with personal struggles. Medical professionals are heroes.
Medical professionals are problem-solvers. They see a list of symptoms and conduct tests until they can appropriately diagnose. They jump over hurdles to find issues. It can take years for them to find answers, but they do not give up. They wait patiently and endlessly work behind the scenes. They do everything they can to help their patients.
Medical professionals have to overcome huge obstacles. In 2020, COVID-19 came to our country. Hospitals were inundated with scared, confused patients. Our nurses, physician assistants, physicians, and many other people had to navigate this pandemic for the first time themselves. They were scared too, but they stood strong and did what they had been taught. They treated millions of patients. Our nation absolutely could not have gotten through the pandemic without our medical professionals. They are heroes.
All in all, medical professionals are absolutely important to society. They are inspirational to others. Each day, they overcome challenges, and they are crucial to those around them.
