Independently happy by Ella - December 2022 Scholarship Essay
Throughout life humans find themselves searching, thinking, yearning for more. Often, they come up empty handed pondering purpose and seeking fulfillment; It is not wrong of people to seek purpose at all, we were created with intention to be intentional. Too many times we search for purpose and meaning in the wrong areas from the wrong people. This year I have learned that pure happiness can never come from someone else's perception of your achievements.
Participation in clubs, extracurriculars and sports teams can be a way for many to connect with people like them. Relationships can bring out the best light in people and provide a way of expression unique to that friendship. Being on a dance team, I know from my own experiences that when you express pride in your own achievements people do not always give you the reaction and support you crave. From their perspective, their lack of support could display jealousy or pride on their behalf. Lack of support can make the receptive person feel inadequate, insignificant, or lead them to believe their accomplishments are not worthy of praise. This year I have learned that personal accomplishments should never rely on the validation of others; This allows for self-growth and discipline to build while providing inner satisfaction from one's own gain. I continue to pursue hobbies and activities that are not as popular but provide meaning and joy in my life. Since I have also learned what it feels like to have your achievements undermined, I do my best to encourage and lift those around me regarding their success and achievements. As Mother Teresa puts it, "Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you've got anyway." This quote sums up the importance of striving to be your best individually even if no one is there to support, praise, or appreciate your success because at the end of the day someone else's feelings cannot be a substitute from the happiness found in one's own ability.
I look forward to starting 2023 with a new appreciation for self-achievement. I know I have the power to encourage others and help them understand that someone else’s perception of you should not define your personality or interests. I hope this essay inspires people to break out of the self-created molds they have made and surprise themselves with all they can accomplish. I hope that 2023 can be a wonderful year of encouragement and growth!
