Relay for Life by Ella - April 2022 Scholarship Essay

Throughout all my years of high school I have been actively involved in Relay for Life, an organization with the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life has taught me what it means to be a part of something bigger then myself, giving back to my community. As a committee chair and four-year team captain at my high school, I am strongly affiliated with the impact cancer has on so many lives. Working alongside the American Cancer Society, I am heavily involved in the fight back against the terrible disease.

My personal connection to cancer inspired me to join Relay for Life my freshman year. After battling cancer for two years and extensive treatments, my grandpa passed away from a rare blood lymphoma in 2016. Both my grandma and uncle were also survivors, battling cancer at a young age. Their strength has encouraged me to stand up against the disease and keep fighting in all areas of my life.

What started as a way to be involved with school, friends, and the community ended up becoming much more. After participating in Relay for Life for four years, I have learned what an impact the organization makes on the lives of so many. Allowing my school and community come together to honor those we have lost, celebrate our survivors, and fight back against the disease makes me feel fulfilled and lucky to be alive. I am beyond proud to help lead the fight towards such a great cause.
