Reinvention and Exploration by Elizabeth - July 2015 Scholarship Essay

In high school, we are often forced into roles by our social group or interests, especially for those of us who went to high school with people we have known for almost all of our lives. However, college is different. Though there are social groups in college as there are in any situation, college offers us any opportunity to meet new people, explore new and unique interests that we could not in high school, and most importantly, reinvent ourselves in any way that we choose. That is exactly what I want to. My goal for college is to is to explore new interests and reinvent myself.
For example, I only recently (in the last two years of high school) discovered two of my passions: creative writing and French, which will be part of my double major of English and French in college. However, life in college is not just what we study in the classroom. College offers many opportunities that I could not or was too shy to pursue in high school, such as theatre and fencing. My high school did not offer fencing, though I have always been interested in the elegant sport. I did have the opportunity to participate in theatre, but I was always too shy. Now, in college, I can pursue these interests as well as make new friends and build confidence through them, and they may become new passions, like writing and French became for me in high school.
I will not let introversion or fear of embarrassment stop me like I did in high school. My goal is to reinvent myself in college as a well rounded person who is adventurous and unafraid to pursue her interests and opportunities.
