Learned this year by Elizabeth - July 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Elizabeth Huerta-Dominguez, and I am a rising junior at Patrick Henry Community College, planning to transfer to Radford University to continue my studies in STEM. As a Hispanic woman, pursuing a career in science and technology is both a personal and cultural journey for me. My academic goals are driven by a deep desire to contribute to advancements in these fields and to serve as a role model for other young women in my community.
The most important lesson I have learned this year is that the actions an individual takes can change the future. This realization has profoundly impacted me and will continue to guide my path forward. I learned that waiting for the perfect moment or doubting my abilities only holds me back. Instead, I need to seize opportunities as they come and take decisive action.
This lesson has motivated me to pursue my academic goals with renewed determination. I understand that my efforts in the classroom and beyond can lead to significant changes, not only in my life but also in the lives of others. For example, by excelling in my STEM courses, I can contribute to important research and innovations that may improve our world.
Staying focused on my goals is not always easy, but I have developed strategies to help me remain on track. One of the key ways I stay focused is by setting clear, achievable goals for each semester. Breaking down my long-term aspirations into smaller, manageable tasks helps me stay organized and motivated. Additionally, I surround myself with supportive peers and mentors who encourage me and hold me accountable.
Another way I maintain my focus is by reminding myself of the bigger picture. I think about the impact I want to have in the STEM field and how my success can inspire other young Hispanic women to pursue their dreams. This sense of purpose keeps me grounded and driven, even when faced with challenges.
In conclusion, the lesson I have learned about the power of individual action has been transformative. It has taught me to take initiative and embrace opportunities, which fuels my passion for my studies in STEM. By staying focused on my goals and remembering the broader impact of my work, I am committed to making a difference in my field and my community. Thank you for considering my application for the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest.
