Accept the Challenge and Persevere by Elizabeth - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

Mine is a story of perseverance, endurance, and learning how to adapt. One of the first things I learned as a child was that the world would not adapt to the needs of my disability, and I would have to adapt to the world. Whether it be physically, mentally, or emotionally; perseverance is a very important trait I learned and that helps me stay focused on both small and large goals. Over the years there were a lot of activities I was not physically able to do, but I did not let my disability stop me from trying new things. Just because a task is considered easy for one person, doesn't mean it may not be challenging for others, but that isn't a reason to back down. I enjoy challenges, and I consider those challenges some of my greatest achievements. I may not be as strong or quick as an able-bodied person, but I refuse to let that stop me from doing the things I enjoy in life. What may seem like a small victory to one person may be a significant achievement for another, depending on their circumstances. This diversity in a person’s perspective serves to remind us that perseverance is not a one-size-fits-all concept, but rather a deeply personal and subjective experience that is shaped by our unique struggles and triumphs.
My educational and career goal is to become a certified public accountant (CPA) within the next 10 years. This aspiration has been deeply rooted in my passion for numbers, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities. Becoming a CPA is not just a career choice for me; it is a lifelong dream that I am determined to fulfill. Because, even with my disability of cerebral palsy, I feel like this is something I can truly strive towards.
To achieve my goal, I understand that education plays a very important role. I plan to pursue a bachelor's degree in accounting through the University Center at McLennan Community College. By obtaining this degree, I hope to gain a strong foundation and knowledge in financial management, tax regulations, and audit procedures. Additionally, I plan to take the necessary steps to meet the academic requirements for the CPA licensure, by passing the Uniform CPA Exam.
Beyond the necessary in school education, I know that acquiring hands-on experience is crucial for becoming a successful CPA. I intend to secure many different internships and part-time positions in well-known accounting firms during my undergraduate years. I know this will take a great toll on both my mind and body to maintain pace with the others in my workplace, but it is something I'm willing to pursue. Joining professional organizations, such as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, will be another milestone in my journey. These associations offer many resources, including continuing educational programs and networking opportunities that can further expand my knowledge of the industry.
In addition to education and practical experience, personal growth is essential to become a successful CPA. Integrity, perseverance, attention to detail, adaptation, and critical thinking are some of the key qualities that I have and strive to further develop. Maintaining good ethical standards is essential in the field of accounting, as CPAs handle sensitive personal information and provide financial advice to their clients. I am committed to keeping this ethical responsibility and working hard to meet expectations so I may continue to do my very best.
Finally, my long-term career goal as a CPA is to create my own accounting firm. I want to create a place where anyone who comes to me can feel supported. I want to provide affordable financial solutions to businesses and individuals, to help their growth and financial situations. I especially feel for those in a similar situation to myself. With the exponential cost of unavoidable medical healthcare, I feel accounting is something that can greatly help the lives of those who need it, making sure I can do everything in my power to make their lives as financially smooth and comfortable as possible. Both by offering my accounting services to those in medical financial situations as well as nonprofit organizations alike.
In conclusion, my main educational and career goal is to become a certified public accountant within the next 10 years. To achieve this goal, I will focus on obtaining a bachelor's degree in accounting, gaining practical and personal experience through internships, actively working and adapting in professional organizations, developing my personal qualities, and eventually establishing my own accounting firm to support my community. My dedication, tenacity, perseverance, and passion for the field of accounting will undoubtedly lead me towards attaining this lifelong dream.
