Education's Greatest Opportunity: Education by Elizabeth - October 2022 Scholarship Essay

Education has always been a passion of mine that allows me to better understand the world. Even though many of my peers would most likely disagree with me, I have found that learning has made me a more well rounded person and gives me the ability to function better with some of the skills I have learned. Math, for example, has proved beneficial in improving my quick thinking because much of the basics have become a reflex in my mind instead of requiring a calculator. Mental math applies to numerous different areas in life, such as finances, grocery shopping, eating out, and many more. I don’t have to worry about taking too much time accomplishing certain tasks. Even if topics like Trigonometry aren’t practiced every day, the repetition from taking those math classes has given me the knowledge I need to succeed in everyday life.
English is another area that education has benefited me in through the years. Being an avid reader, getting to analyze texts, interpret words of writers past, and seeing how it connects to my own life has taught me better ways to understand others and to grow as a person. I have been able to learn different points of view and grow my knowledge of the world by seeing it through the eyes of others. It gives me the opportunity to better appreciate the ideas around me without feeling attacked because they are different from my own. Literature is a wonderful building block for our world that is used to set a powerful foundation for the values of ourselves.
Lastly, Education has long provided me with the desire to learn more. Through the work of many educators who have been wonderful to me and encouraged me towards reaching my highest potential, I am assured that there is a place for me to do good works in order that society may be better. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, and education is one of the best ways to learn how to utilize both. There is so much in life that awaits us; education is the way to expose us to it all, but it’s up to us whether we allow ourselves to be educated or not.
