Selfless Service by Elizabeth - June 2019 Scholarship Essay

It was my sophomore year in high school, and I thought anything that didn’t go my way meant my world was ending. I also thought I was right about everything. Wrong! When I first started high school, I was really excited, and I had pretty good grades. However, when I started my sophomore year, my parents’ marriage started to fail. This made me feel as if I myself was a failure. So, my grades in school began to suffer. Luckily for me, I had amazing teachers who made me realize my potential.
I had a variety of teachers who had reached out in such a difficult time. However, a specific teacher stood, Ms. Church. My older sister had taken her English before, and I was lucky to have her as mine. She had noticed my grades dropping, so she pulled me aside one day and asked me what was going on with me. I had told her about my family situation, and then she offered to give me extra time on two important assignments I had missed from before. After that, Ms. Church always checked on me throughout the school year. If there was one thing I learned from her, it would be selflessness.
Not only had Ms. Church helped me during that time of need, but she had also put aside her problems to tend to me and my classmates. In the beginning of the year, she herself had faced a death in her family. Her only child had passed away. I was amazed by how much she had cared her students during such a tragedy.
To this day, I have remembered her. She motivated me to become a teacher myself. I am a current sophomore in college. Whenever I feel like giving up when things get tough, I remember her. Since my sophomore year in high school, I have always wanted to become a teacher so that I can be another Ms. Church. I want my future students to know that someone cares for them. That is exactly what MS. Church showed me.
