how I over came freshman and Sophomore year by Elizabeth - April 2019 Scholarship Essay

I believe that my grades from freshman and sophomore year are not a true reflection of who I am as a student. The decline of my grades came after my parents divorce. I have also helped my father raise my three younger brothers of ages 8,9 and 11. I realize that freshman and sophomore year I didn’t prioritize my education. I felt like I didn’t have the family support I needed. Although it was a hard beginning, I have found my way through high school and am ending with a strong senior year.
During my junior year, I began staying after school to receive the help I needed. I reached out to my counselor and started planning my future. At that time, I felt it was necessary to reach out to my teachers to explain my situation. To me, it was a very important step in order to advance my high school education. I gained support from my teachers and did better in my classes. I started working on myself and focusing on my study methods and homework.
From this chapter in my life, I gained discipline, courage and most importantly, my aspiration to become an early childhood teacher. Through my brothers I learned how to acknowledge the struggles of younger children. During this time I became more aware of how my actions could have and impact on my future. I became more independent and started working at a grocery store before the age of 16 in order to earn my own transportation money and weekly allowance. As a senior, I have improved my grades significantly. I recognize that I am a student before anything. I am a also a resilient young Mexican woman trying to make an impact in children’s lives.
