The Benefits of Challenges by Elizabeth - March 2019 Scholarship Essay

Try not to go into classes with preconceived ideas on how you need to do in them and instead learn about balancing your time. There is nothing wrong with having goals, those are very important, but holding yourself to too high of a standard can be jeopardizing. If you made it all the way through middle school having straight A’s, that does not innately mean you must retain this during high school. Classes become harder, especially if you decide you want to take challenging ones and also be involved in extracurriculars. If you are starting a class that is very demanding, work to not get mad at yourself if your grades are not perfect. Regardless of how much effort you put in, there are going to be subjects, units, concepts or other areas that simply are difficult for you to understand. This does not mean you are stupid or are not working hard enough. It says a lot that you were determined enough to take an arduous class, regardless of whether you had perfect grades.
Both throughout high school and beyond, having a good work ethic and experiences with struggling is beneficial. Adjusting to college is a formidable task, especially if you never previously had practice with managing tough endeavors. Gaining practice with difficulty in high school makes the transition to college more smooth. Do not be afraid to be brave and take classes that require extensive effort and determination, this will help your future as well as present.
