Dear Brain, Please Shut Up by Elizabeth - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

I have a set schedule most of the week: I wake up, which is not a struggle compared to some of my peers, I go to school, do my homework, eat dinner and then crash in bed. During the day, my mind may not be prone to solve endless math problems or determine the pressure of a given container or answer why we can't use the freedom of speech anymore in this society, that is until I decide to lay my head down on my pillow. My brain speaks for itself and doesn't shut up. Where were you during the day when I needed to answer these questions?

For some reason, it's alive and fully functional when I least need it. Oh, I finally remembered that one song my friend couldn't think of. Wait, I finally figured out the short cut to question nine on the homework problem. Dang it, I could of said this to my crush after I ran into him in the hallway. It's all the same, endless cycle.

Sometimes this process doesn't upset me, even though most of the time it's an inconvenience. I dream awake. I have the ability to finally think things over and process what I need to do the next day or in the future. I can come up with great comebacks or even think of a perfect essay to write for a college application. :)

Many nights I even find myself walking around my room or grabbing a midnight snack because I can't find the strength to go to bed. It's not always easy being a night owl when everyone is asleep but it does have advantages for thinking of a better future and a world of possibilities.
