Never Be Afraid to Ask Questions by Elizabeth - November 2018 Scholarship Essay
If I were able to have a senior quote, I would want to ensure that I was sending a helpful message to my peers. Due to the large amount of seniors in my graduating class, I would want to declare my best advice in a concise statement. This way, people will have a higher chance of reading and understanding my point of view. My senior quote would be, “The important thing is to never stop questioning,” by Albert Einstein. This quote is valuable for others to see because asking questions enhances the understanding of an individual and their group of peers.
Often, individuals will sit through a semester-long course and stay confused. Social anxiety is often the reason that teenagers refuse to ask questions in class. However, when one does ask questions, they have “aha” moments when everything begins to make sense. Learning is not just memorization, it is connecting and understanding concepts. A key to this individual understanding is “questioning” their current knowledge and growing as a person.
Furthermore, in groups; when one person has a question, they fear that their question is irrelevant to the whole group. In fact, many students end up with the same misunderstandings on examinations or even after a lecture. When one person asks a question, they are also helping those around them. Additionally, one person might inspire others to ask questions. Others may not be grasping the concepts, but they fear questioning. It only takes one person to benefit the rest of the group by simply asking for clarification or explanation.
In summation, the continuous questioning of understanding is essential to growth. The individual and the group can begin to truly comprehend their material once they begin to question it. For my senior quote, I would definitely want my peers to remember the value in asking questions about everything. It would be something that is overall positive and helpful to all involved.
