Choose one word to describe why you wish to attend college, and explain why you chose that word by Elizabeth - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
As my introduction I would like to say hello, my name is Elizabeth Chavez and I am a future college student. A will say little background information about myself. I am a Hispanic 17 year old and have lived in the U.S all my life. My parents were field workers for a short period during my childhood and later on moved on to work in different jobs. My father is a taxi driver and my Mother is a plant worker at a nearby plant nursery and they have been doing that for about 11 years. Because of my parents need to work, I grew up in a very disciplined home and had to be on my best behavior which has still stuck with me until now. With that, responsibility was something that I had to learn and I was told I was responsible to attend school and get the best grades possible. It was always drilled in my head that college was my path and that I will attend college to have a higher chance of a better life, which I would use to help others, especially my parents since they already did so much for me and my siblings.
Community. That is the word which is pushing me towards college.
The reason I chose this word is because for more than half of my life I have given a tremendous amount of time to my community and it is something I enjoyed. As a kid I volunteered in a radio show as a host as well as the radio broadcaster, because it was a radio station which was all for helping farm workers. At the time my father was a board director in the group so it helped me out and got me behind the mic. In this radio show it was me and five other young children the ages 7-12 who would give their opinions of everything going around us at the time and give advice which would be useful to the migrant community. I was in this group for about 7 years since I was someone who helped as a facilitator once I was older. In this group I had appeared on television, lead capital marches and made speeches in front of giant crowds.
After leaving the group I still wanted to keep giving to the community so I volunteered around the community in different school events, community events or random places people needed help in. Because of this I became aware of my ability to speak to people and being able to help them. This then got me a job at a local shoe store where I work at today as well as being a kids tennis coach during the summer.
Not the reason I will use this work to go to college is because I wish to continue that habit that has taken me all my life to create. Going into college I will like to become and optometrist or a pharmacist an use my knowledge to go abroad. I have wanted to go to third world countries and help out their need for medical attention. Sure I wont be in the front line in that operation but I will be able to help out hundreds of people doing so. I have wanted to do this because I admire the people that do that type of work. After having seen all of the natural disasters which have affected thousands of people I have felt the need to go to those places and help out. I might not be the person that creates a cure for blindness or finds a remedy for the common cold, but I do want to be part of a team who does things to help people allover the world for nothing in return.
