Describe a teacher who has positively affected your attitude toward education. by Elizabeth - July 2014 Scholarship Essay
I have had many teachers during my life. I was blessed to have many great instructors but one specific teacher I believe will always be at the top of my list. Mr. William Roper is the teacher at the South Campus of Tarrant County Community College in Fort Worth, Texas. He is a math teacher focusing only on the developmental courses.
Throughout school my math skills were very poor. I really only snuck by barely passing until I got to Mr. Roper’s class. He makes learning easy. I went from barely knowing my multiplication tables in college to being at the top of the class each semester. There were three developmental algebra classes to take and I came out with 100’s in all of them. It made me very proud of myself to know that I was able to not only learn but enjoy my math classes. Mr. Roper uses comedy also to help you learn. He has lots of little sayings and quirky jokes for different formulas which makes them easier to learn.
He gave me the courage to continue on with going back to college. I took one of his classes the very first semester I had returned. I ended that semester with a 4.0. I know that it was in me all along to be able to understand math I just needed someone with the patience to help me discover that. I enjoy math to the point where I’m excited to get into calculus. I was very sad to learn that he would not be teaching anything other than the developmental courses.
I have used myself as an example plenty of times to my fellow students letting them know that Mr. Roper is a great teacher to take. I have also heard from many of them that I was correct in advising them to take him. You can tell that he really enjoys his job and is wonderful at it. I do go by and try to see him when I can to say hi and see how he is doing. That is how I feel he has positively affected my attitude towards education.
