Singularity Found by Elizabeth - June 2014 Scholarship Essay

Writing a book seems to come easy to many out there but the trouble everyone faces is very similar: What do I write about? How do I get people interested? And how do I get it published? But what they do not realize is that to write a book, one must forget about the main opinion of the world, they should write what seems interesting to them; speak from the heart. Although this is not a guaranteed way of dealing with the troubles listed, it is a way of expressing one’s self and eventually using the voice they have incorporated into the book to spread their message out to the rest of the world. The best book a person can create is one that expresses their individuality. This creates multiple genres for many but for me this raises only one topic, nonfiction.

Although I am capable of creating a well-written fictional story, nonfiction expresses who I am much more than other genres I have written. A fictional story requires creativity, imagination, and little white lies, all of which I struggle to create. Whereas a great nonfiction story can be created from life experience; speaking from the heart. I find it very easy to bring about a nonfictional story out of thin air, and because they are very factual it is very simple for me not to lose focus. To be more specific, the type of nonfictional book that articulates my originality is an auto-biography.

A teenager’s favorite way of writing is an autobiography? Yes. I found out this fact when I was in the 8th grade and my teacher asked the class to compose a fictional story to determine our final grade in the class but I was unable to. So I went to my teacher and told her that I was really struggling with creating a lie and she told me that I should create my own story and she would help me edit and revise. The next day I showed her my story and she told me that I had written an autobiography, the complete opposite of the restrains she had given. She sat down with me and helped me create a middle school themed fiction. In the end, I received a C on the assignment but she told me later on that if she was asking for an autobiography then my first story could have received an A.

Non-fiction is the only genre I feel I am able to express my uniqueness. When I write an autobiography, I ignore the opinion of the rest of the world and only think of speaking from the heart. Although many people find it very simple to create a story, some still find it challenging to express their originality. I am very pleased to realize what genre reveals the best of me to the rest of the world.
