The Fundamental Building Blocks of Life by Elizabeth - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

If I were a college professor and was given the opportunity to teach any class, I would chose to teach chemistry. I would chose to teach chemistry because it affects every aspect of our daily life from the chemicals we use to the foods we eat to what we breathe in every few seconds. Chemistry is extremely important to understand because it can explain multiple aspects of our environment like what temperature water freezes at, how much energy is consumed from a banana, and how carbon monoxide is dangerous. Without this knowledge, people would be in a lot of danger. For example, what if a person did not know that lead piping were dangerous? Well, that person would have the chance to develop lead poisoning if they had it this type of piping in their household.

Not only is knowing chemistry important but you can also apply the information that you learn. I would want to teach this course so that people can realize that using your chemical knowledge is amazing. For example, when given five foreign substances and five names of the substances, you can narrow down which substance is which just from physical and chemical properties. For example, if given a chemical that has a strong odor and the only substance on your list with a strong scent is ammonia then you can deduce that the substance that has the strongest smell is ammonia. You can also apply this knowledge with color, the formation of a precipitate, and the production of gas.

While there are dozens of classes to teach, chemistry is the one I hod closest to my heart. I would love to teach this course because of it being such an interesting subject, the ability to apply your knowledge from this course, and the importance of the subject in our daily lives.
