Nothing can Stop Them by ELizabeth - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

In the midst of frustration, it is often easy to judge or blame teachers for our bad grades. But the truth is, teachers play a critical role in our learning and development. With such a hard job, it is hard for me to choose what I would want to each. However, I would love the opportunity to teach a special education class.
Seeing how others treat my cousin just because he is classified as special ed breaks my heart. He is truly amazing and lights up my day, and when he is feeling down, I am able to do the same for him. In my teaching, I would want to bring in student volunteers to visit the class once a week during their lunch. This would offer the volunteers to see how being in a special education class does not stop someone from being an outstanding human being. It would also offer the special education kids I would be teaching the opportunity to form friendships. Most of all, I would love to watch the kids grow and learn throughout my teaching.
Through teaching a special education class, I would be able to help not only the kids in my class, but other students in the building. They would collectively learn from each other, and I would be able to spread the message that being in a special education class can’t stop you from achieving great things.
