If I was a college professor I would teach... by Elise - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

If I was a college professor I would teach Mythology because it is a subject I am passionate about. It is extensive and crosses over into a lot of other areas of education and is so much more than stories, myths, and beliefs. Mythology is a foundation that has supported our society and cultures for centuries. As a professor, my biggest motivation would be the education of my students. If I did not teach a subject I felt strongly about I would not be giving them the education they deserve. That is why I could not think of a better subject to teach if I was a college professor.

When you hear the term ‘Mythology’ you may have an image of mighty Zeus surrounded by clouds and lightning bolts. Maybe you're thinking about those Thor movies with Chris Hemsworth. Or maybe you're thinking about Disney’s light-hearted version of Hercules with catchy tunes and glowing gods.Whatever it is that may come to mind when you hear the term, is just a little image of a bigger picture. Mythology is everywhere, we just don’t realize it, have you ever wondered where we came up with the days of the week? Why is the medical symbol a staff with two snakes? Why we tend to associate owls with knowledge? One of the things I love about mythology is that you can go anywhere with it. For instance, Medusa, many may have an image of a woman with snakes for hair and eyes that turn lookers to stone. Which is partially correct, however, what I could think of at least five different discussions to be had on Medusa. From her relation to women’s roles in society to the importance of monsters and heroes in literature. Mythology is a subject that never gets tiring because there is so much to examine. That is why I am passionate about the subject and would want to teach it.

To conclude, I could not think of a better subject to teach than mythology. There is so much to examine any wheres from language to art and so much more. Mythology is an endless subject that I have always found fascinating. I would hope that I could share the same passion I have for this subject with my students. That is why if I was a college professor I would teach mythology.
