Definition of College Success by Elisabeth - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
The main purpose of college is to prepare for the work force. Skills that students practice in college are intended to transfer to the skills they practice in their adult lives, which hopefully means becoming a productive member of the workforce. Many people lack the confidence to be in a leadership position because it holds a lot of responsibility and requires taking a lot of opinions into account, so it is important to build leadership skills in college before they are forced into an uncomfortable position after joining the workforce that requires leadership skills that have not been developed.
College is an excellent time to build such skills because it is a time to be exposed to new opportunities and passions, meet new people, and become an individual. The numerous leadership positions I have held have taught me that a person learns what their strengths and weaknesses are and to be more self-aware while holding that position. People learn how to handle responsibility, to deal in a constructive manner with people who are counting on them, and how to accomplish goals in a timely and effective manner. These are all skills being part of the work force requires, and college is the perfect time to build such skills. It does not matter if that means being a tutor to other students, holding a management position at a job, being the head of a fraternity or sorority, captaining an athletic team, or serving as the President of a club or another student organization.
Nearly any leadership position will teach the aforementioned skills and assist in adapting people to being in that type of situation, thereby preventing them from being left unprepared after joining the work force. To me, success in college means being prepared for the life afterwards, primarily being part of the work force. Therefore, in order to achieve this success, it is essential to develop leadership skills throughout college.
