The impacts social media has on learning. by Elham - March 2022 Scholarship Essay
In my opinion social media has negatively impacted the way I learn. Social media is used as an interaction tool that others abuse the power of and can direct away from the truth. Social media has impacted many lives in negative ways. There are some upsides to social media, like bringing awareness to certain topics. But in some instances the bad outweighs the good, and that is the case with social media and how it impacts learning.
There are little advantages to the way social media impacts learning. Some upsides to the situation is that it increases creativity in students. They see all the ways something can be done which inspires them to create something of their own which can create a positive impact on students' learning experiences. Social media also helps students find resources to help with school. For example, there are multiple teachers on social media using their platform to teach people all over the world. These teachers have helped me in a way because at one point I struggled with an AP class but with the help of social media, I began to understand the topics we were learning and became stronger in the class.
The list of how social media impacts learning negatively can go on and on. Social media causes shorter attention spans due to the features on platforms. Along with shorter attention spans, students get distracted easily. They want to check their phone frequently to see if something has been shared or posted on Instagram. Social media also has instigated multiple fights, riots and bullying. Since everything can only be controlled to a certain extent on social media, many things can get out of hand.
In conclusion, no matter how fun social media is or appears to be, it can negatively affect your education. From personal experience I have become distracted easily and constantly feel the need to check my phone to see what is going on. I have been drawn to drama because of various social media platforms. Social media is something like a drug, very addictive.
