Dining With the President by Elena - October 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I could have dinner with any U.S. president, it would have to be James Madison. He has done a number of great things for the United States. He is also from one of the time periods that I love the most, the 19th century. He was also a very smart man. Some U.S. presidents have not been very educated, and make questionable decisions.
James Madison is known as the "Father of the Constitution" and has published notes of what it was like during the Constitutional Convention. Madison was a Federalist, meaning that he believed in power being split between the State and Federal governments. Others eventually agreed in the rationalism of being a Federalist. Before becoming president, he was Secretary of State for Thomas Jefferson, which is pretty impressive. James Madison was also the Father of the Bill of Rights, which is still used today to define the rights of citizens of the United States. He also was president during the War of 1812, which had to have been tough.
I would want to eat dinner with James Madison because I would want to hear an account of all the things he has done for the United States. It would be so amazing to meet someone like that in person. He would have a lot of interesting things to say, and he could help me understand the culture and history of his time period more. And I feel like he would have good table manners.
