Studying Abroad by Elena - March 2016 Scholarship Essay

Imagine taking a semester off from your cozy dorm room and spending that semester learning in

another country? It would be a whole new country of fresh faces, there are career and educational

opportunities that you don’t have back home and it is overall a life that you’ll never forget. Now doesn’t

that just sound exciting, it makes you want to look at brochures and plan the trip now! Well first, let me

share some of the benefits of studying abroad.

Maybe you currently live in a tiny college town, you know everyone from the mailman to the

grocery store clerk. Maybe you’ve grown up around these people your whole life and some of them

have known you since the day you were born. Maybe you’re ready for a change. Studying abroad is just

the fix, it allows you to travel to another country and be in a fresh new place. You don’t know anyone

but maybe the other students you’re traveling with and it’s an amazing feeling. You get to meet people

who can possibly become lifelong friends. Who knows, maybe after you leave you’ll come back later in

life and visit the same people you met when you studied here? The relationships you create will affect

you for the rest of your life.

Other countries can give you career and educational opportunities you just can’t get from your

home. Things like picking up other languages, working in unfamiliar situations and collaborating with

people you’re not used to can help you when you return home. By being in these unique situations

you’ll become more personable and more a leader when you are put in work settings in the future.
