The Written Dream by Eleanor - February 2019 Scholarship Essay

When I learned to write, I took off with it. I was an avid writer, filling journals and journals with stories of all kinds, since I was five. I knew I wanted to be a “book-maker” as I called it then, and knew my passion was writing. I wrote in so many different genres as a kid- from deep fantasy, to comic strips, to drama, to even horror. By age ten, I had begun writing a book whose ideas and plot has changed so many times over the years, but has kept me determined throughout, to keep writing, and to believe that I will get there someday. Now, that book is almost completely plotted out, and so is another book I began to write recently, thanks to my determination.

Getting there will definitely be a challenge for me, due to my household’s financial situation. It’s just my mom and I, and I thank her for being able to keep our lights on and keep food in our fridge, as well as keeping us in the house we’re in, but we both know that when it comes time for me to head off to college to pursue my goals for my dream job, it’ll be a huge struggle to get me there.

I’m planning to attend Olympic College in Bremerton, Washington during my last two years of high school, through a program called “Running Start”, which will allow me to do so tuition-free. I’m absolutely thankful for that opportunity, because I not only will be able to graduate high school with college credits, but my goal is to graduate with an Associate’s Degree in English. This will be the first part of my college goals, but to achieve a Bachelor’s Degree after I graduate, I will need funding.

My dream college is the University of Washington, because it is an extremely good school, and is noted as pretty much the top school in Washington State for an English degree and major. I would love to go there, if I could. It would allow me to have a very good resume for not only publishing companies in the future, but for other employers seeking good writers. To one day become the author I had always envisioned myself being, would mean the absolute world to me.
