Change Starts in One Little Corner of The World at a Time by Eiricivette - December 2023 Scholarship Essay
My chosen major is environmental engineering, and while not a lot of people may immediately understand what that major means, it’s something I care about a lot. It’s also a major I constantly think of using to make the world a better place, specifically the environmental issues we face on Earth today. Though, imagining what potential my future holds is not even close to all I need to do to make my mark on the world.
To care is the first step, and I’ve taken thousands up until now. I’ve created a whole pathway of my own up to this point, but I want to not only move forward in this metaphorical path towards a safer, more sustainable world but initiate the change of paths for other people as well. I have a persistent vision to not be alone on this journey of making the world a place that’s kinder to the environment. I’m doing it one little corner at a time. I'm enacting the change I want to see in the world. I motivate and educate people around me to take actions that are more environmentally friendly. For instance, through my club, we educate people about what specific steps they can take to make a positive influence in dealing with the world's environmental dilemmas. In addition, we are preparing a fundraiser for ocean cleanup organizations. It's rewarding to help those with more resources to continue doing their fantastic work of conserving oceans and other locations in need of protection.
One day I hope to have a greater influence on the actions people take to conserve the natural habitats of animals and plants living on Earth when I earn my higher education. I’ve always cared for the environment and the conservation of the world we live in. I can recall that ever since I was young it was something I valued tremendously. In particular, the protection of ocean life was something that motivated me to do a better job at making responsible decisions with resources. The oceans are such an important part of our world; they're important to the air we breathe, and the food we eat. I strongly believe that to protect the environment is to protect our future. That is why, my major of choice, which is environmental engineering, is the investment I'm making for a brighter future for marine life, and the life of the planet overall.
I strive every day to do my part in reducing waste, using more sustainable sources of energy, or just simply recycling to the best of my ability. However, there are setbacks as a high school student. There will be fewer setbacks when I am someone with a degree where I can put my outstanding math skills to use for a greater cause. I’ll be able to create more widely spread solutions to the climate complications and environmental issues we face today. Through my major, in environmental science and engineering, I will acquire all necessary skills to create and distribute ethical, sustainable and mechanically efficient solutions to the countless dilemmas in all sorts of terrains on Earth. The oceans included! :D
I am also looking forward to obtaining a more educated understanding of my impact on the environment as an individual, and what other things I may be unaware of are causing problems with the preservation of any wildlife. One day I will proudly say that I contributed to the invention of some fantastic technological advancement that was a productive step forward for the safety of marine life. I will try my best, and if things take me in that direction, I hope to one day work toward policy changes in our government that will benefit not only ocean life and its environment, but the health of all wildlife on Earth, and even the health of people that can be negatively affected by the environment at times.
All I wish for is to be given the chance to make the world a better place.
I'll start with my own little corner, and work my way up.
