Advise For Incoming High School Freshaman: Learning About Yourself by Edyth - March 2019 Scholarship Essay
The transition to a new school is often a scary and confusing process, one
might encounter many hardships along the way. I would have felt extremely grateful if I had received any sort of advice as I transitioned from middle school to high school since I had no one to really explain the process to me, I learned along the way, through trial and error. That is why my advice to any incoming freshman would be to enjoy these four years of high school, allow yourself to take time for yourself and focus on what really makes you happy. This could be interpreted in many ways. A student could find pleasure and happiness in getting involved in after school clubs, another way I see it it to really take all the learning experiences throughout the years to really get to understand yourself and what really makes you happy.
Through high school one may encounter a variety of opportunities whether it be to join clubs after school or volunteer to help out students and teachers. One should try and become involved in school activities, it opens up opportunities to find your true passion. You can learn so much about yourself by helping others and being in the presence of others. Don’t close yourself off or have a fixed mindset, venture out to try new things because you never know what you might find out about yourself by doing this. Do theses things out of the kindness of your heart, not just because you have too or because a group of friends are doing it. Do it because you find pleasure in it and because it’s something that true makes you happy.
You may also encounter many obstacles along the way that may discourage
you from continuing to pursue something you truly desired. Bottom line is to try as many things as you can, you might succeed at some and you also might fail. All of this is okay, instead of beating yourself over what you think you should have done differently you should use it as a learning experience. Things don’t always work out the way you want, if you really want to find happiness and peace with yourself; you have to be able accept this. Other opportunities will come later on, don’t be inpatient. It might be hard to find the positive side of situations like this however remember that everything happens for a reason and other good things are sure to come. You have to stay content with yourself and just acknowledge that you tried because others many not even try so that’s already a huge accomplishment from your part. Be proud of what you’ve actually tried and learn from every experience in order to continue growing as a person.
Throughout the years you may get caught up in trying to get good grades,
perfect attendance, and excelling in all your classes. This will become quite burdensome. Allow yourself to relax from time to time, of course never ignoring completely your obligations at school and home but to understand yourself. Understand that you have a limit and as long as you know you tried your best, be happy knowing you have it your all. Don’t do things to please others because that will only hurt yourself, do things that will make you happy. You don’t have to have extremely good grades like everyone else, everyone has different goals and maybe those with good grades enjoy pushing themselves more than the average person; but you should concentrate on your own goals and what will really make you happy in the long run.
You want these four years to be some of the most memorable moments of
your life, spending time with friends, family and full of achievements. Why would you waste these years dwelling on the past or being unhappy with what you’ve already achieved. Surround yourself by people that bring joy to your life and ignore all the negative that may be around you, focus on yourself and always keep your goals in mind. Never change who you are for anyone because high school can be full of different opportunities but always remember to do thing that will bring a lifetime of happiness for yourself.
