Singing Will Save You by Edwin - June 2018 Scholarship Essay

Fine arts are usually electives that are under appreciated in a school's environment, at least that's how it is in my high school. I am always grateful for having a free education, but I believe that one can always strive for better. In my school the principal had always been telling the student body to focus on the football and basketball games and that we should always have the best school spirit. Which was odd because she had never gone to any of the school's choir concerts of my 3 years of attending that school. I guess the school spirit she talked about so much was only meant for varsity sports. Sadly the principal had neglected the fine arts programs including the band, choir, and drama classes. Of course I was in choir my entire time in high school so I might be biased in my opinion. But I believe that the arts were equally as important as any of the other extra curricular activities. Especially a chorus elective. Music is one of the biggest influences in people's lives. It has enough power to change the way we perceive the world. It is is so influential that a single song can can change our mood. Singing is incredibly helpful in our lives. Singing can drastically reduce anxiety and uplift our spirit, especially when doing it in a group. One of the best moments in my life is when I was singing along side my closest friends. Whenever two or more people sing together it can strengthen the bond between them. Whenever I told someone at school that they should join choir they always felt afraid or embarrassed to. When I asked them why they always said they had a 'bad' voice and that they couldn't sing properly. I told them they were wrong, because everyone can sing. Maybe at first when they join they will be confused, but with enough practice it will come naturally. When I first joined my choir class as a freshman I did not know how to sing at all. My technique was dull and lazy, but with enough determination I got better. I even got good enough to become the section leader for the tenor section my senior year. And it didn't happen because I had an innate talent for singing. It was because I pushed through the hard times. I had many failures, but knew that you do not win without multiple losses. Even if you are not even in high school you should still make an effort to join a choir. Whether it be choir in your local church community or a choir at a university or college your attending. Unfortunately I did not have the best high school experience, but I do know that being in my high school's choir had made it all worthwhile.
