The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner by Edwin - May 2017 Scholarship Essay

One of the most influential books I've ever read was "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" which is a long poem written by Samuel Taylor in 1798. The poem is about two men who is about to enter a wedding but they are stopped by a man who catches their attention. This man tells them this very long story of his previous voyage on sea and the unfortunate events that happened on that ship. As he tells them this story the two young men are just mesmerized by his appearance and his tale and the man has this urge to just get this burden or tale off his choice.
I read this book when I took my AP Literature class my junior year of high school. I can honestly say that this was one of the very few books I've read where I was hooked and addicted from start to finish. The way how Samuel Taylor used word diction, rhyme schemes, allusions and especially imagery really caught my attention and had me really addicted to the book.
The reason why I say this book was one of the most influential books I've ever read was because it really got me into poetry and poetry plays a huge role in my life today. Before I read this book I honestly didn't find poetry interesting or entertaining. Poetry was just something I had to do as a class assignment or homework. However, after I completed this book I started to look more into poetry. I started to read a lot more of it. One of my favorite poems I've read besides the "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" was "To Coy His Mistress" written by Andrew Marvell. However, I not only read poetry I started to write my own because I was inspired. This not only led to poetry being a hobby for me but an escape for me when I was feeling down or sad because all I did was read and write poetry. So when I had these feelings all I did was write and read continuously. I also, started getting into slam and stand-up poetry. I found this side of poetry the most entertaining because the way the poets would interact with the audience was very satisfying.
So you can see how "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" played a huge role in my life which led to me falling in love with poetry and poetry influenced me to write my own poems which I have shared with family and friends and at the same time was a stress-reliever because it helped me get away from all the frustrating things that were happening in life. It also inspired me to explore many poets all across history. Lastly, it inspired me to watch slam poetry which I find very entertaining.
