What is your next big educational goal? by Edgar - August 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Edgar De Leon and I am first-generation Latino seeking to graduate in Computer Science. I am also 22 years old and the oldest of 4 with my siblings following right behind. My parents immigrated here from Mexico and Guatemala and constantly work hard to provide us with a better future. My journey to college started off in an unordinary manner since it was in the midst of the pandemic in 2020. The change was very abrupt and it took me some time to adjust to. I was so used to going in person and being hands on that switching to long distance learning had a huge effect on me. I was doing fine at first, but soon after got really distracted and the obligation of not having to go in person also did not help. Soon after, my grades began to drop and I wasn’t in a healthy mental place either. After some thinking I decided to take a semester off to rethink what career I wanted to do. It really helped me regain my focus and excitement for learning new things. After my break, I took a computer science course and fell in love with this career and decided to major in it .I plan on majoring in computer science and hopefully work in a big tech company after I am finished. I truly do enjoy the world of coding and software and I hope to add to it or make a difference. I also began to raise my GPA and retake old courses that I had failed before and began to make A’s in most of them. My aim was to raise my GPA and transfer to Texas State so it would be more affordable and be able to attain my dream. After about a year of hard work at a community college, I was able to raise it to the requirement and be able to transfer into TXST. My hard work and determination proves that I am a great candidate to receive this scholarship, and I am now more determined than ever to finish my degree. With the help of this scholarship, it will allow me to be one step closer to achieving my dream and help cover my tuition or books that I may need. I currently work fulltime and help my family cover some of the expenses so this scholarship would be a huge blessing and help put me in a better spot to graduate in computer science. I aim to help further the world of computer science and make a difference in the field
