A time I helped someone In meaningful way by Eddie - March 2026 Scholarship Essay

There are many times that I've gotten to help people in different ways that were meaningful. There were times like picking up their messes, lending them something they needed, or even just holding the door open for people to walk past me. But the one time that I helped someone in a meaningful way helped me learn better to understand people’s perspectives and as well as making being kind to others no matter what.

The time that I learned from this experience was when me and my friend were at school, we came back from a field trip and I was wandering around waiting for my parents till I saw her crying on a big rock our school has around the front. When I came up to her she was on the phone and I overheard her mom yelling at her which made me wonder what was going on. After she was done with her call I sat down quietly beside her and waited a moment to ask if she was okay. She then told me softly that she was going through something back at home as she spoke about her mother getting mad at her for not going with her brother back home with him. She then adds that her brother and her had an argument in which he put her hands on her ( slapping her in the face ) and left her at the school. When I heard this I felt disturbed as well as sorrow for her, I knew that her brother was in our school which made me feel a bit sick that he would do that. I told her I was sorry that she got into trouble for something she tried explaining to her mom. I wanted to help her out in some way that would be helpful, the only thing I had to offer was a hug but I thought it would be weird for her to hug me since I am a guy and all. But when I offered her one, she accepted and we both shared a moment. As we both got up, we both had to go home since my mom came and we told each other “goodbye”. The next day came, she then told me thank you for the hug, I replied with “ Your welcome, and told her that you are important to me, remember that”.

In short, I got to experience something that was meaningful to me and my friend, being able to better understand that kindness is something that is the best thing to do in any case, and become better aware about people’s perspectives when going through harsh times. I feel better knowing that I could make a difference but also be understanding to those around me as life moves on.
