Just Dance! by Ebube - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

“Alright guys, that’s it for practice today. Everyone did great!” announced the dance instructor. His name is Dom and he was the founder of Artist of Movement, a hip-hop dance crew that is affiliated with an after-school program known as “AS220 Youth”. Although the group disbanded due to tense conflicts between its members months ago, I like to reflect back on the intriguing choreographies and extravagant performances we would showcase throughout my local community in Providence. I remember being the one who readily picked up on every move, step, and transition that was taught by Dom. Thus, it makes me ponder upon the opportunity of becoming a dance professor and teaching dance to the next generation just like Dom has taught me. It would be an amazing chance to enrich people with this extraordinary skill.

Dance has become a huge part of my everyday lifestyle. From the moment I wake up to the instant I sink into my bed, I am constantly in motion. When I dance, I intensely feel every movement to the point where I can feel my individual muscles contract and release their raw energy. There is an immense sensation of power that surges through me as I enter into my element. The idea of having full control over my body fills me with an incommensurable sense of freedom. My imagination runs wild as my innovative mind creates new moves and physical illusions that will mesmerize the eyes. My style of dance flows like water and is smooth like ice. It has potent flavor and a zest of spice. My style of dance leaves everyone in the room filled with surprise.

Dance is also a form of art. Anyone can make various visual representations of people, objects, seasons, mood, or even the environment, all simply through moving around. Through dance, people can paint a picture by using their body as the brush, the music as the paint, and the world as the canvas. Through these aspects alone, anyone can create a magnificent masterpiece that would move mass crowds and leave them struck with awe. Hence, I would love to teach other students how to make their own magnificent masterpieces through dance. It will be a chance for me to guide the next generation to confidently make their own visual art and showcase their diligent work to the eyes of the public.

In addition, dance is a form of language. Some people usually find it difficult to communicate through words alone in a comprehensible manner. Luckily, unlike other languages, dance is a universal language. People from all walks of life can use it to communicate with others from around the world. Through the motion of their body, people can aesthetically articulate their thoughts and feelings. Moreover, the expression of powerful messages about social issues or personal struggles can be shared in a manner of potency that could never be reached through words in a sentence. By instructing students in dance, not only would I be showing them a work of art, I will be showing them a new language to speak and freely express their minds.

My heart passionately goes into every freestyle or choreography that I execute, and I would love for other people to do the same. As I scroll through the various courses that my school has to offer, I stumble upon one class that involves hip-hop dance. The instructor’s name is Mr. Dominic, and at that moment I automatically thought of Dom, the founder of Artist of Movement. He was the one who pushed me to continue working with hip-hop dance and spread my art around the world. My style of dance flows like water and is smooth like ice. It has potent flavor and a zest of spice. My style of dance leaves everyone in the room filled with surprise.

Thus, I smile and apply for the class, determined to grow as a dancer so that one day, I too can eventually enrich the minds of other aspiring dancers of the next generation.
