The Early Bird Gets the Worm! by Ebony - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

I know I cannot be the only student who has stayed up in unholy hours of the night, tiredly working on school assignments the day they are due. When faced with this situation enough times, many begin to think they are at their most productive during nighttime. After all, why wake up early in the morning when the temptation of keeping awake at night is so alluring? Although I can easily turn into a night owl when faced with procrastination, I generally consider myself to be a morning person.
Our natural circadian rhythm is programmed for being productive during the early hours of the day. It is said that humans in ancient times awakened when the sun rose, and slept when the sun fell. Therefore, it is fitting to follow the same schedule in order to maximize productivity.
Waking up early in the morning makes me feel like I have all the time in the world to do my work. It is also very peaceful at dawn, enabling me to meditate or listen to calming music before beginning on the tasks at hand. By practicing mindfulness, I am setting myself up for a day of focus and productivity. On the other hand, if I continued to stay up late to complete work, I would feel exhausted and would not perform at my best, causing my final product to be less than stellar.
Arising early in the morning allows me to truly be mindful, focused, and productive.
